Watch: Worcester Inmates Perform First Concert
This was the first year of the music program at the Worcester House of Corrections.
WEST BOYLSTON, MA — Some inmates at the Worcester House of Corrections are doing their time a bit differently, through music. A new program at the jail allowed inmates to showcase their musical abilities and build new ones. To celebrate a successful end to the program, the jail hosted a concert in December featuring the inmates in the program.
The music program is called Oppor-Tune-ity and was created in partnership with Anna Maria College. For months, inmates in the program learned to read music, play instruments and write their own songs in the program. The group performed their songs for an audience at the jail on Dec. 13.
"For these inmates this music is about sharing their stories in song and verse about the perils of addiction and a new life in long-term recovery," the Worcester County Sheriff's Office said, adding that the music program has been a therapeutic benefit to the inmates.
