Westborough Gets $115K For Route 9 Traffic Study, Upgraded Signage

The funding comes from the state's Fair Share Amendment budget.

WESTBOROUGH, MA — Westborough is expected to receive more than $100,000 to help keep its streets safe, according to state officials.

Westborough will get $115,000 in state funding for a traffic study of Route 9 and for upgraded roadway signage, Sen. Michael Moore (D-2nd Worcester) announced in a social media post on Tuesday. The legislator said the funding comes from a legislative earmark included in the state budget supported by revenue from the Fair Share Amendment.

"I'm proud to share that Westborough will be able to pay for a traffic study of Route 9 and for upgraded roadway signage thanks to a $115,000 earmark I secured in the recent Fair Share Amendment budget," he wrote in the announcement. "These dollars will help Westborough keep its streets safe for all who use them."

The funding comes from the state’s “Fair Share” surtax, approved by voters in 2022, which adds an additional tax on annual income over $1 million. It's also known as the "millionaires tax."

Revenue generated by the Fair Share Amendment is placed into a state fund dedicated to public education and transportation and distributed through the annual budget process rather than as direct payments to individual communities.
