Westborough Gets Over $60K In 'Shared Streets And Spaces' Funds

WESTBOROUGH, MA — Westborough will share in more than $16 million from a state program aimed at making it safer for residents to walk and bike in congested areas.

On Tuesday, MassDOT announced a new round of grants from the Shared Streets and Spaces Program, which began in summer 2020 to upgrade walking, biking and transit to support commerce and outdoor activity following the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

In this round, Westborough received $32,490 to buy snow removal equipment to clear sidewalks and bike lanes; and $30,792 for pedestrian safety elements, according to MassDOT.

The share streets program has awarded about $50 million in grants for close to 500 projects since it began. About 138 municipalities and seven regional transit authorities received grants in the funding round announced this week.
