Westborough, Hopkinton Drivers To See More I-495/I-90 Ramp Closures

WESTBOROUGH, MA — Drivers using the I-495/I-90 interchange should expect overnight ramp closures this week as construction work continues.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said two ramps at the interchange will close from 11 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday, affecting drivers traveling from I-90 eastbound to I-495 northbound and from I-495 northbound to I-90.

The I-90 eastbound ramp to I-495 northbound, Exit 106, will be closed during the overnight work. Drivers will be detoured onto I-495 southbound to Exit 54A, West Main Street in Hopkinton, to reverse direction back to I-495 northbound.

The I-495 northbound ramp to I-90 eastbound and westbound, Exit 58, will also be closed. Drivers will be detoured to Exit 59B, Route 9 westbound, to reverse direction onto I-495 southbound and access I-90.

MassDOT said the closures will be rescheduled to Thursday night, if there is inclement weather.

Signage, law enforcement details and messaging will be in place to guide drivers through the work area. Drivers should expect delays, reduce speed and use caution, according to MassDOT.

What The Interchange Project Includes

The work is part of the I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvements Project in Hopkinton and Westborough.

The project is meant to provide a safer and more efficient interchange, replace the existing interchange, eliminate the former toll booth area and weaving areas, improve ramp spacing and acceleration and deceleration lanes and add an auxiliary lane from I-495 northbound to Route 9, according to MassDOT.

New bridges are also being built on I-495 over I-90, on I-495 and I-90 over the MBTA/CSX/Amtrak lines, on I-495 northbound over Flanders Road and on Fruit Street, according to MassDOT.

MassDOT says construction is ongoing and the project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
