Westborough Lions Club to Host Peace Poster and Youth Speech Contests

Annual Contests Showcase Westborough Talent

This fall, the Westborough Lions Club is once again hosting its annual Peace Poster Contest for Middle School-aged students and its Youth Speech Contest for High School students. Westborough has produced state-level winners in both contests in recent years.

The Peace Poster contest is designed for students between the ages of 11 and 13 to express their visions of peace and inspire the world through their art and creativity. This year's poster theme is Dare to Dream. Each poster will be judged on three criteria: Artistic Merit, Originality, and Expression of the Theme. Last year, Erica Sato of the Gibbons Middle School in Westborough won the local, District, and State competitions, and was entered into the International Competition.

The deadline to enter the Westborough Peace Poster Contest is Friday, October 13th. The winner will be selected by Saturday, November 4th. All entries will be displayed at the Westborough Public Library the week of November 1st. More information on the contest and details on how to register can be found on the Peace Poster page on the Lions website: http://westboroughlionsclub.org/.

The Youth Speech Contest will be held on Tuesday, November 28th, at Central One Federal Credit Union. It is designed for high school-aged students to provide a platform for them to hone their public speaking skills. It is also a great addition to a college resume!

Each student must deliver a five-to eight-minute speech on this year's topic: With Which Historical Figure Would You Most Like to Speak? Three judges will evaluate each speech on delivery, effectiveness, and text. There are four levels of competition: Local, Region, District, and State, with monetary prizes at each level, culminating in a $1000 District-level prize and a $1500 State prize.
