Westborough and Northborough Named Green Communities

Westborough and Northborough are eligible for up to $152,000 in grants for improving energy efficiency.

WESTBOROUGH, MA- The Baker-Polito Administration announced Thursday that Westborough and Northborough were two of 30 municipalities designated by the Department of Energy Resources (DOER) as a green community.

The designation requires a commitment from cities and towns to reduce energy consumption from town buildings by 20 percent over the next five years. In return, green communities are eligible for grants to pay for projects which improve energy efficiency. Proposed projects include LED interior lighting upgrades across schools and municipal buildings and HVAC upgrades to improve efficiency and enhance occupant comfort.

Westborough is eligible for $152,096 in grants. Northborough is eligible for $149,309 in grants.

The goal of the Designation Grant Program is to support communities’ investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects that further the clean energy goals determined by the designated communities.

“As these 30 newly designated communities invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, Massachusetts continues to lead the nation in clean energy,” said Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Matthew Beaton.
