WHS Students Organize 5K, Candlelight Vigil

Saturday's event will support The One Fund.

Westborough High School students "wore their Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins stuff to school" last Tuesday, their second day of class since the Boston Marathon bombings, senior Mark Aronson said.

"Now, we're trying to do something tangible, something that we can get money to The One Fund," he said.

A 5K walk/run and candlelight vigil organized by all four classes' officers will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday on the school track.

There is a $10 cover fee at the door for walk/run participants.

The students hope to raise a few thousand dollars for The One Fund, Aronson said.

"If people were looking for a way to contribute to that cause, we're just hoping to create a venue for that," he said.

The event also is an opportunity "where all Westborough students can come together and participate in this, and really make an impact in the greater statewide community," Aronson said.

Participants will do laps around the track, he said. A candlelight vigil on the turf will follow. Some members of the Westborough Interfaith Clergy Association and some students will speak.

Aronson noted that the students were on April vacation during the bombings.

As that week progressed, "I sent out a Facebook message to get in touch with all the class officers about trying to organize something," he said. The 5K was among the ideas.

On their first day of school after vacation, the students met with Principal John Smith and Assistant Principals Brian Callaghan and Carol Cavanaugh. The next day, the school had a Boston Spirit day.
