Tomorrow morning Team Westford will be heading to Hopkinton State Park to walk in the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) Walk. This event has been important to me all along, but this week it became even more so.
Just this week in the news there was a story about a 13-year-old boy in Texas who died after being bitten by fire ants. His allergy hadn't been known. What does this have to do with a food allergy walk? His life might have been saved by legislation being championed by FARE to stock EVERY school with epinephrine. 25% of reactions in schools happen to kids with no previously known allergies.
Closer to home a friend's child had a reaction that was a reminder that even all of our best efforts and planning can't always keep our kids safe. But the support network we've formed, because of FARE and other organizations, helps us cope with those moments.
Our team has now grown to 30 participants and we've raised more than $3,400. Please help us raise even more. Visit www.foodallergywalk.org/boston/teamwestford to make a contribution.
