2012 Superhero Pond Skim at Nashoba Valley Ski Area

Superheroes from Westford and beyond brave the icy-cold waters at Nashoba Valley Ski Area to provide entertainment for the crowd on this gorgeous day.

Skiers and Snowboarders flocked to Nashoba Valley Ski Area last Sunday to participate in their annual March Meltdown Pond Skim and BBQ event.  It was an incredibly warm day for the beginning of March.  The temperatures soared into the 60s, helping the competitors after plunging into 34 degree water.

Last year the pond was 39 feet in length, and a high percentage of the attempted crossings were successful.  This year at 79 feet long, the pond claimed more than half of the 77 skiers and snowboarders that dared to participate.  The resort's Director of Marketing explained, "This year we've made crossing the pond more difficult and only the best will succeed.  It's a challenge to every skier and rider out there, to beat this obstacle as we make it bigger each year!"

Anyone dressed as a Superhero or Villain got a free BBQ lunch, and pond skimmers dressed for the theme gained a couple bonus points from the judges.

Even Nashoba Valley Ski Area's owner Al Fletcher was involved, gracefully clearing the pond and performing a 360 degree spin as he exited the pond dressed as Batman.

This event marks the end of the season for Nashoba Valley Ski Area.  Even without any significant natural snow this winter, the Ski Area still had sufficient base depths of man-made snow and skiers and snowboarders were turning down the slopes all day as the pond skim took place in front of the main lodge.
