Alternative to Metal and Wire Braces

Many patients will ask, "Why are some people born with straight teeth and others have large spaces or overlapping teeth?"  My answer is not as simple as one would think.  In most cases, our bite is more of a genetic condition similar to the color of our eyes or the shape of our body. 

Other causes of misalignment can be the early loss of teeth, either baby teeth or adult teeth, which can prevent subsequent teeth from aligning properly.  Our teeth are not anchored to the bone and have the ability to move and shift.  The shape and position of each tooth is designed by nature to form a natural arch that supports the full bite.

Crooked of misaligned teeth can:

• cause muscle aches and jaw (TMJ) problems
• increase risks of breaking a tooth or having tooth aches
• make proper hygiene difficult, increasing the risk of gum disease and cavities
• make people feel self-conscious of their smile and overall appearance

Techniques and technology to straighten teeth have improved greatly over the last few years.  We now have a way to treat the misalignment issues with alternatives to traditional metal wire and bracket braces.  In addition to clear ceramic brackets which are less obvious than metal, we have Invisalign.
