FOOD for THOUGHT: Water, It Does a Body Good

The saying may go "You are what you eat", but you really need to drink what you are.

(Dietary changes should be discussed with a health care provider.)

Here is a short, sweet (but no sugar added) post with an easy challenge for the holiday weekend.

Water may be even more important in the daily diet than was previously realized.  It has been known for a while that the body is about 60% water and that the brain is about 70% water and that drinking water keeps these cells hydrated.  Water is also known to be good for the skin and digestion, and drinking water before meals and snacks lets you feel full and satisfied with less food.  On top of this, a recent study (The Adventists Health Study–I funded by the National Institutes of Health) following a group of men found that those who drank 5-6 glasses of water a day had a 60-70% reduction in the risk of fatal heart attack.  (Soon we will discuss food choices that make those odds even better.)  Join me in raising a glass (of water) to good health.

FYI: It’s a curious fact that many people feel hungry instead of thirsty when they aren’t getting enough water.  So, next time you head to the kitchen for a snack, drink a glass of water while you’re perusing the snack selections.

CHALLENGE #4 of 50:

Dig out water bottles for the whole family and take them wherever you go this week.  See if you can make the proverbial 8 glasses of water a day a reality.  If you really have trouble convincing yourself to down the water, add a splash of lemon, lime or cranberry juice (UNSWEETENED (unfiltered too if you can find it)), but other than that it has to be water – sports drinks and other liquids don’t count for this challenge.  It can be hot water or cold water as long as it is just the right temperature for you.

QUOTE of the WEEK:

Pure water is the world's first and foremost medicine.
