In May 2011, Jessica Leong (then 10 years old), of Westford, had a meeting with Saf Lerman-Caruso, Executive Director of DCF's Kids Club, Boston. In this meeting, Jessica learned that children in DCF care often travel to and from foster homes with their belongings in trash bags. Jessica was moved when hearing this, as trash is to be discarded; she knew that these children needed to get the message that they were important, despite whatever may be going on in their lives!
When Jessica's meeting with Saf was over, Jessica was determined to help these children, and in doing so, last year raised more than 60 backpacks that she filled with school supplies for children in need. Jessica raised the money by hosting bingo nights and movie nights at her home.
This year, Jessica has already raised enough money for 50 backpacks (again to be filled with school supplies), but has a goal of 100 backpacks by August 31st. Anyone interested in making a donation of backpacks, school supplies, or "other", please email Jessica at tjml3@yahoo.com.
