Five Great Westford Nonprofits

Highlighting Westford organizations that do a lot of good.

Welcome to "Patch Picks," a weekly feature where we choose a theme and highlight five things in Westford and beyond that embody that theme.

This week's theme is nonprofits. , some of which are highlighted below:

  1. Westford Conservation Trust. Reader Kathy Nolan Deschenes nominated this one. Here's what she said: "They've been around for more than 25 years, I believe, and are the driving force behind all of the trails in town. Not only do they hold precious conservation restrictions for Town and their own properties, but they also lead trail and wildlife walks, advocate for open space, and work with Eagle Scouts in town to facilitate their projects."
  2. Friends of the East Boston Camps. Reader Beth Perkins nominated this one. Here's what she said: "(The organization is a) very active organization that supports the conservation, preservation and improvement of this beautiful 300 acre property in the heart of Westford."
  3. Westford Food Pantry. Located at the Cameron Senior Center, this organization has been providing food to needy residents since the 1970s. It is staffed by all volunteers.
  4. Westford League of Women Voters. This organization dates back to the 1920s. The League’s goal, according to its website, is "to empower citizens to shape better communities ... the League of Women Voters does not support candidates or political parties. It does take positions on public policy issues, providing that the issue has been studies and agreement (consensus) has been reached on needed action. When the League adopts a position on an issue, it swings into action as a very effective lobbying organization."
  5. Lowell Humane Society. The Lowell Humane Society is a local non-profit shelter, housing homeless pets and working hard to find homes for their many four- and two-legged residents.
