Grey Ghosts Give Bishop Guertin Rude Awakening in Cross-Border Clash

The two schools are separated by only a few miles and a state border, but 's 19-7 girls' lacrosse victory over Bishop Guertin on Saturday highlighted what could be seen as a difference in the state of high school lacrosse in the two states.

Westford's win was almost a mirror image of their contest against highly ranked Lincoln-Sudbury earlier in the season as Bishop Guertin head coach Ron Cote saw the experience as a learning opportunity for his girls.

"We knew we'd have our hands full, but we thought we'd hang in there for the entire game," said Cote. "I'm glad we came down here before playing Bedford (N.H.,) next, this game was a good experience for us to show just how far we have to go."

On the other side of the coin, the Grey Ghosts were pleased with not just the score, but the fact that the entire team, including younger players, got a chance to continue developing their skills during this contest.

"The girls just blew it out in the first half," said Westford Academy head coach Julia Oliver. "We focused in the second half on making sure that everyone got work on ball handling. The girls are really playing great, and this was a good team building experience."

The Ghosts have won their last five games, all of the games since the Lincoln-Sudbury game, and now stand at 7-2 on the year. Their next contest is against Newton South on Tuesday.
