Huber Breaks School Record; WA Swim Team Finishes Second in DCLs

Kelly Huber powered the Westford Academy girls swim team to its best-ever finish at the Dual County League Championships Saturday.

The Ghosts finished second to Wayland, with Huber winning the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breast stroke. Her time of 1:08.28 in the breast broke the school record.

Jen Markkand set the meet record with a 1:55.39 time in the 200-yard freestyle for a first-place finish. Marrkand also finished second in the 100-yard backstroke.

She and Huber were named DCL All-Stars.

“It was a total team effort,” said Westford coach Harriet Kinnett.  “To see the kids get faster and faster each time out is something special.”

Courteney Martin and Christa Bodemann finishing second and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly. Mara Tynan earned fifth in the 500-yard freestyle.

“I’m so proud of how we swam today and we’re excited for sectionals next weekend and states the following weekend,” said Kinnett.

The Grey Ghosts head to MIT for the MIAA Division 1 North Sectional on Feb. 13 at 9 a.m.
