International Serene Day Will Focus On Anthropogenic Interventions

On March 20, three ways to honor the first ISD include taking a walk in a park, having a candlelight dinner, and seeing the Milky Way galaxy

WESTFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, USA - An annual Serene Day to be observed on March 20, was first proposed by Dr. Chaitanya Hiremath, founder and president of SEALOEarth, in his United Nations address in 2022, at the Interactive Dialogue of the General Assembly on Harmony with Nature in Commemoration of International Mother Earth Day.

The magnitude of climate change and loss of biodiversity is enormous. However, numerous other important aspects are often overlooked as a priority. It is critical to foster pride in our unique planet because mere will and resolve are not enough to restore its serenity. Keeping in mind the well-being of all inhabitants of planet Earth, Serene Day is needed to create awareness of anthropogenic intervention at several levels encompassing air, water, land, light, sound, thermal, nuclear, and space. International Serene Day (ISD) provides the opportunity for humanity to appreciate the beauty of nature and the grandeur of life around us.

“The solutions to our planet Earth’s problems, big and small, begin with an appreciation for nature”, stated Dr. Hiremath. “Some basic needs on Earth include moonlight for turtles, quiet waters for dolphins, and nature for humans. The goal of International Serene Day is 100% me-time with nature and the task is 100% appreciation of nature. The connection with nature is simple and stirring.”

Research has shown that there are several benefits of being out in nature, including an increase in attention span, a decrease in stress and anxiety, and an increase in the ability to think critically and make better decisions.

Through International Serene Day, SEALOEarth intends to focus on human activities that are affecting the natural ecosystems. Air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution are well known. However, there are other interventions that are less familiar to a common person. For instance, many animals rely on the Earth’s cycle of natural light and darkness to survive. Disorientation from artificial lighting causes thousands of hatchling deaths each year in Florida and is a major marine turtle conservation problem.

On this Serene Day, people anywhere and everywhere are encouraged to do three simple things:

  • Take a walk in a park
  • Have a candlelight dinner at home
  • See the Milky Way galaxy with the naked eye

Dr. Hiremath added, “We are happy to share that couple of local restaurants in Massachusetts, Karma in Westford and Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza in Littleton, have offered to provide a ‘candlelight experience’ under dimmed lights when customers mention ‘Serene Day’. This is a great start and we are very grateful for their enthusiastic participation.”
