School Offices Evacuated

Heavy snow on the roof of the Millennium building forced staff to move to the nearby Abbot Elementary School.

The snow-covered school administrative offices were evacuated as a precaution this morning, Superintendent Bill Olsen said.

Snow drifts measuring several feet high have accumulated on the flat roof of the Millennium building where school staff work. The building has a wood infrastructure -- weaker than stronger steel setups -- putting it at risk of collapse.

Crews are now removing snow from the building. Staff were moved to the nearby Abbot Middle Elementary School. It was unclear when they would move back.

"Over the next several days a roofing company will be inspecting all school roofs and removing any areas of excessive accumulation due to drifting," Olsen said in an e-mail.

Those needing to reach administration staff are asked to contact their e-mail address or reach out to individual schools, Olsen said.

The evacuation forced Friday's "Superintendent Open House" to be postponed to Feb. 11. It also forced tonight's 7:30 p.m. Conservation Commission meeting to be moved to the J.V. Fletcher Library.
