Shirley Prison Locked Down After Gunshot

Police said someone fired a gun right outside the prison Thursday afternoon. A search turned up nothing.

SHIRLEY, MA — There was a shooting outside a state prison in Shirley Thursday afternoon.

State Police said a corrections officer at the prison hear a gunshot outside the prison walls at about 3:25 p.m. Officers then saw a man fleeing on foot, police said.

The prison was locked down; no one was hurt and all inmates were accounted for. The Shirley prison is home to disgraced New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, who’s serving a life sentence for murder.

K-9 units and a helicopter searched the area but didn’t find the suspect. He was described as a white man with dark pants.

Police said they were continuing to search for the suspect.
