"The WAGS" Dominate Masco, 4-0

The Grey Ghosts girls' soccer team made quick work of Masconomet in their opening MIAA Division 1 North playoff contest, opening the path to a rematch against Peabody.

Despite a chilly Saturday night on Patten Road, Westford Academy girls' soccer (known as "WAGS" by their fans) proved to be red hot, rolling over the the Chieftains of Masconomet, 4-0.

Although the Grey Ghosts had plenty of chances throughout the night, they couldn't put a ball into the back of the net until Caitlyn Paltsios' strike in the 17th minute, assisted by Hayley Katowski's first of two assists on the night.

Paltsios would add another goal after the half, joining Danielle Trani, who also had two goals on the night.

"We came to play tonight," said Westford Academy head coach Tracy Capone, who thought this was one of the team's best games of the season so far. "We passed the ball well, we took alot of shots on net, that was one of our weaknesses all year long. We've been working on the attacking third for the past two weeks and it paid off."

For Masconomet head coach Paula Yanakakis, the blowout was proof that despite finishing only third out of five in a strong Dual County League large division during the regular season, the Massachusetts high school girls' soccer world should be wary of the Ghosts over the next few weeks.

"Their record obviously doesn't show what they are," said Yanakakis. "They're a good team, they've got alot of speed upfront, and they play good on turf."

Now the WAGS will seek to upset second seeded Peabody for a second year in a row, a task that Capone believes will be difficult, but possible.

"We won't be able to catch them off guard this year," said Capone. "If we can contain (Peabody's) Hayley Dowd and put pressure on their keeper, we might be able to make a game of it. We expect to go in there and be competitive."

The Peabody contest takes place in Peabody at 5 p.m. on Monday.
