Westford Company Announces New Virtual Desktop

The Lan Drive based Virtual Computer hopes that its new NxTop system can create excitement for Virtual Desktop Infastructure systems by decentralizing them from servers to regular computers.

Westford-based Virtual Computer hopes its announcement from late last month will soon revolutionize the world of “virtual desktop infrastructure” or VDI, a type of cloud computing where a single desktop screen can exist simultaneously on multiple computers.

The Lan Drive company believes that its new NxTop desktop virtualization system can eliminate the need for costly servers and create virtual desktops  that can run on multiple computers while being hosted on a PC.

"2011 is shaping up to be the year when client-side virtualization breaks out. We saw dozens of customers move from pilots to production roll-outs this quarter with more on the way," said Dan McCall, CEO of Virtual Computer.

Virtual Computer executives hope that bringing the concept of a client-based VDI to the market will not only help their profit margins, but also further develop the concept of VDIs as a whole.

"Server-hosted VDI has been around for years but there haven't been that many server-hosted VDI products that have gone into production, and that's because of the challenges of running that kind of system on a server when it wasn't designed to run them," said John Glendenning, senior vice president of worldwide sales and business development for Virtual Computer."Server-hosted VDI is not delivering on its promise. Virtualization of the desktop is a good thing. It's just the execution that has been a problem."
