Westford Man Honored at the White House

Westford’s Joe Sullivan was one of 14 honorees in Washington this week as part of a ceremony for the White House’s “Champions of Change” program.

The ceremony honored innovators in “STEM” (science, technology, engineering and math) advancements for disabled Americans ranging from new forms of wheelchairs to studies on mutations of heart disease.

“STEM is vital to America’s future in education and employment, so equal access for people with disabilities is imperative, as they can contribute to and benefit from STEM,” said Kareem Dale, Special Assistant to the President for Disability Policy. “The leaders we’ve selected as Champions of Change are proving that when the playing field is level, people with disabilities can excel in STEM, develop new products, create scientific inventions, open successful businesses, and contribute equally to the economic and educational future of our country.”

Sullivan serves as the president of the Westford-based , a company that has produced Braille related technologies since 1975.

Additionally, he is also a member of the International Council on English Braille’s technical design subcommittee and maintenance committee.

From Washington, Sullivan then travelled to South Africa where he received the Blind SA Medal of Honour at the Fifth General Assembly of the International Council on English Braille.
