Westford Police: Extra Patrols This Month

Westford police said they're launching extra patrols in May targeting seat belt use.

WESTFORD, MA — Westford police said they're launching extra patrols this month targeting seat belt use. It's part of the nationwide "Click It Or Ticket" campaign; about 200 Massachusetts police agencies are participating this year. The patrols will run through May 29.

"This high-visibility mobilization will promote seat belt use through increased traffic enforcement in an effort to reduce motor vehicle deaths and injuries," Westford police said in a statement.

In 2015, 172 people were killed in vehicles crashes in Massachusetts and in 64 percent of those cases the individual was not wearing a seat belt, officials said. Massachusetts seat belt usage is about 78 percent, below the nationwide average of 90 percent, officials said.
