Westford Special Olympian Returns From Greece With Medals

Westford Academy student David McInerney earned two silver medals and a bronze medal at the 2011 World Summer Special Olympic Games in Athens earlier this month.

While millions of participants take part in the Special Olympics throughout the world each year, Westford’s David McInerney can now say he at the top of that list after his performance earlier this month.

McInerney, who trains at Ironstone Farm in Andover, returned home taking part in equestrian events at the 2011 World Summer Games in Athens, Greece with silver medals in the Working Trails and Dressage events and a bronze medal in the English Equitation competition.

In addition to beginning with Special Olympics five years ago, McInerney has also achieved academic honors at , where he has participated in group activities such as school musicals and soccer games.

“(Special Olympics of Massachusetts) is proud of McInerney and his accomplishments at the 2011 World Games,” said Special Olympics of Massachusetts’ president and CEO Robert Johnson. “Athletes like McInerney promote inclusion for those with intellectual disabilities by demonstrating to the world what they are capable of achieving on and off the field.”
