Wolf Pack Ends Grey Ghosts' Perfect Season

Westford Academy drops to 4-1 after Boston Latin breaks a near deadlock at halftime, giving the DCL Large lead to hated Acton-Boxborough.

Earlier this week the 1973 Miami Dolphins uncorked the champagne to celebrate the defeat of the last undefeated NFL team this year, but if Coach Shula and company are looking to do the same for the Dual County League Large Division's 2011 boys' basketball season for some reason, their eyes would now go to Acton-Boxborough.

That's because the previously undefeated Grey Ghosts fell to the Wolf Pack of Boston Latin on Thursday night, 51-44, leaving only 's hated foe to the south with a spotless record so far in the campaign.

At first, it appeared that the Ghosts might have able to duplicate their dominance against Weston earlier this week, opening up an 8-3 lead to start the contest, but their lead dropped to one by the end of the first quarter and the two teams continued to battle back and forth, with Boston Latin taking a 22-21 lead into the half.

That lead came in large part thanks to Wolf Pack captain Jack Duggan, who had 15 of those points and added another six after the break, sparking a rally for the visitors.

"He was pretty much the story of the game," said Wolf Pack head coach Brendan Smith.

Although the Ghosts were able to put up spirited moments late in the contest, the third quarter surge proved to be insurmountable, as Boston Latin's lead had grew to nine by the end of the third quarter and would hold steady near that level for the rest of the contest.

"Latin did well defensively to keep our scoring down, we can improve on that, but give them credit coming over here on a Thursday and doing well as they did or as poorly as we did," said Westford Academy head coach Ed Scollan.

Duggan led all scorers with 25 points while Westford captain Ryan Jann went 5 for 6 from the charity stripe, leading the home team with 13 points.

The Ghosts lick their wounds at 4-1 as they seek retribution in the Lowell Spinners Holiday Tournament next week before opening up the new year with a trip to Wayland before hosting their now DCL Large leading rivals Acton-Boxborough on Friday, Jan. 6.
