Butter 31
The Yellow Submarines were able to hold off a furious second half comeback to defeat a very talented Butter team 38 to 31.
The Yellow Submarines finally used the pregame warm-up to actually warm-up. As a result they came out fired up and got off to a fast start.
Jillian Chrysikos scored two quick baskets to start the game, the first off the opening tip and the second on a steal, giving the Yellow Submarines an early 4-0 lead. The next few minutes showed some early nervous energy by both teams as they managed just a couple of baskets amid a slew of fouls and turnovers.
However, the Yellow Submarines offense exploded by turning to an outside game. Rachel Templeton and Maimuna Ahmad each fired up three pointers that found the bottom of the net and Katie Perrone followed up with a mid-range shot to extend the lead to 20-7 at half-time.
The stands were packed with friends, family and fellow WYBA HSG players, all into the excitement of the game. The crowd was loud in the first half but they really went into a frenzy in the second half. The senior dominated Butter really came out to play in the second half.
They raised their level of intensity on both ends of the floor. The furious comeback was led by the inside play of Abbey Hyslip and ball handling of Stacy Shackleton. The Yellow Submarines got out of rhythm and into foul trouble. Tasheem Bhindarwala, Rachel Harkins, and Alexis Jacobson helped the Butter defense force several second half turnovers.
The crowd was at its loudest after two fast-break layups by Nicole Souza that made it a single possession game.
However the Yellow Submarines finished strong. Amy Cornelius and Leah Bushey each scored to help the Yellow Submarines maintain the lead. Lauren Bushey was key in defending against the three pointer and helped hold the Butter to no long range field-goals for the game.
Taryn Chrysikos went 4 for 4 on her final trips to the foul line. Brianna Mills closed out the game on an open look under the basket in the final moments on a well-executed full court press break by the Yellow Submarines team.
The Butter put up 24 points in as an exciting of a second half of play as the WYBA HSG playoffs have ever seen. Richa Kaul and Julie Bransfield rounded out the scoring for the Butter with 4 points each.
