📰 News we're reading

• Shortened preseason has high school football coaches worried about players' health and readiness (bostonglobe.com) — High school football teams, including a group that scrimmaged in Westwood with Milton and Oliver Ames, are adjusting to a shortened preseason that coaches fear could hurt player safety and game quality. With fewer scrimmages and practice days, many programs worry about sloppy early-season play, more injuries, and Massachusetts teams falling behind better-prepared opponents from other states.

• Westwood Resident Pleads Guilty to Paying Employees 'Under the Table' (town.news) — A Westwood resident has pleaded guilty to failing to pay more than $580,000 in federal and state employment taxes after paying restaurant workers in cash "under the table." The operator of eateries in West Roxbury and Stoughton now faces potential prison time, supervised release, heavy fines, and restitution at a December sentencing.

• Electric meters in Mass. are getting a 'smart' upgrade (wbur.org) — Massachusetts homes, including those served by Eversource's smart meter testing lab in Westwood, are rapidly being upgraded to smart electric meters that send detailed usage data every 15 minutes. Supporters say the technology could enable money-saving rate plans and faster outage response, while some residents remain wary about privacy, health concerns, and the potential for higher bills.
