Abbey Reality Makes Ribbons Supporting Fallen Weymouth Officer

WEYMOUTH, MA — Weymouth Reality hosted a blue ribbon-making event today in support of the Weymouth Police Department and the family of Sergeant Michael Chesna. Chesna was shot and killed Sunday morning responding to a report of erratic driving near South Shore Hospital.

Business owner Karyn Oneil and her staff started making ribbons at 9 a.m and with help from the community, will continue to all day.

O'Neil said she was inspired to help when she watched the arraignment. She wanted to be able to do something to help. O'Neil said it's amazing to see the community come together and support the Weymouth Police Department the way it has.

"I've lived in Weymouth my whole life and had my business here for 24 years," said O'Neill. "I've never been prouder to be from Weymouth."

Mary Barton, a realtor at Abbey Reality said a big part of why she wanted to help was because this tragedy hit so close to home. She said her brother in law is a Quincy police officer, who works a similar overnight shift to the one Chesna did. Her brother in law like Chesna also had a young child. His son is 9.

"This stuff doesn't happen in Weymouth," Barton said. "It should never happen in Weymouth."

Barton said the support they've received from other communities with this event today was strong. The office received calls today from Hanover, Braintree, and other communities wanting to help.

Barton said, "We've had a big response on Facebook. This was a grassroots Facebook post."

The ribbons made today will be hung up throughout the Weymouth community.
