Alert Neighbor Leads to Arrest of Break-in Suspect

A Sandwich man is accused of breaking into a vehicle at South Shore Hospital and a Weymouth home.

An alert neighbor is being credited with helping police arrest a break-in suspect Wednesday afternoon.

Matthew McCormick, 25, of Sandwich, was charged with breaking and entering in the daytime for a felony, larceny over $250, malicious destruction of property over $250, breaking and entering into a motor vehicle in the daytime for a felony and unarmed robbery.

On May 6, police received a call from a person at South Shore Hospital who watched as McCormick allegedly rummaged through his vehicle. When the car’s owner confronted McCormick, he was assaulted by McCormick, who fled with the victim’s iPhone that was stolen from the car.

Shortly later, a neighbor on Liberty Street reported a suspicious male in a neighbor’s backyard. When police arrived, it was determined that the house was broken into and McCormick was potentially still inside the house after observing a smashed out window pane on a side door and another door that was slightly open.

McCormick was apprehended inside the home. At the time of his arrest, he had a backpack full of stolen items and the iPhone that was stolen from the victim at South Shore Hospital.

McCormick was held overnight on $10,000 bail and is due to be arraigned Thursday afternoon at Quincy District Court.

Weymouth police called the arrest, “a great example of someone seeing something suspicious in their neighborhood and calling the police.”
