Cambridge Man Charged with Second Drunken Driving, Drugged Driving Charge After Allegedly Crashing into Pole

A Cambridge man tried to walk away from his car after driving it into a pole on Union Street while intoxicated, police say.

Jovanny Taveras, 37, of Cambridge, was arrested charged with drugged driving, drunken driving (second offense), leaving the scene of property damage, operating a motor vehicle to endanger, marked lanes violation, and possession of an open container of alcohol inside a motor vehicle according to the Weymouth Police Log. He is currently free on personal recognizance.

According to a police report obtained at Quincy District Court, police responded to the incident at 3:36 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Weymouth dispatch told responding officers that the driver was gathering his belonging and heading towards Rockland on foot.

Police observed Taveras sprinting full speed down the road before slowing down to a walk when the police cruiser pulled up next to him.

When police asked Taveras where he was going, he said he was going to his girlfriend’s house on Union Street after a trip to the liquor store.

Police said they noticed a strong odor on Taveras along with slurred speech and glassy eyes.

Witnesses told police that they saw a man who matched the description of Taveras at the site of the crash place his personal belonging inside the trunk of the car before leaving the scene.

Tavera was taken into custody after failing two out of three field sobriety tests. He is due back in court on Jan. 8.
