Gas Leak Closes Route 18 In Weymouth
There were detours on Route 18 near Derby Street in Weymouth as crews examined and repaired a natural gas leak.

WEYMOUTH, MA — Crews were assessing and repairing a gas main leak in Weymouth on Thursday after local businesses reported smelling gas. Route 18 was closed early Thursday afternoon at Derby Street and traffic was being detoured after a pipe was ripped from a gas main.

Weymouth police said the road was expected to be closed through about 10 p.m. Route 18 was closed northbound at Pond Street — Route 58 —and Main Street. Traffic was diverted north on Pond Street. Southbound traffic was closed at Main Street and Pond Street at Pleasant Street. Southbound traffic was diverted south on Pond Street.
WCVB-TV reports the two-inch pipe was ripped from a 12-inch main by a contractor. National Grid was on scene assessing the situation and preparing for repairs Thursday afternoon.Large gas main break in #Weymouth.
