Driver in Fatal LynnWay Auto Auction Had Numerous Crashes in Weymouth, South Shore

The man who was behind the wheel of Jeep Cherokee​ that suddenly accelerated at the LynnWay Auto Auction has a lengthy driving record.

The man who was behind the wheel of Jeep Cherokee that suddenly accelerated at the LynnWay Auto Auction in Billerica has a lengthy driving record that includes crashes on the South Shore, license suspensions, and various other violations.

The driving record of 76-year-old Roger Hartwell shows that he was at fault in multiple crashes in Quincy, Weymouth and Milton, according to RMV records obtained by WHDH. License suspensions and violations for driving without an inspection also appear.

Hartwell was driving the Jeep at the LynnWay Auto Auction on May 3 when the vehicle accelerated into a crowd. Four people have died and more have been injured as a result of the crash.

Investigators say Hartwell accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake but Hartwell contends that the vehicle accelerated on its own.

The crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.
