Hatchet-Wielding MBTA Worker Accused In Weymouth Attack: Police

She told police, "I know I'm going to get fired for this" after the alleged attack on an 83-year-old man.

WEYMOUTH, MA – An MBTA trolley operator is accused of attacking a Weymouth man while holding a hatchet, according to reports. Maryellen Shields, 55, of Newton, was ordered held on $10,000 bail at a dangerousness hearing Thursday.

Officers responded to Franklin Street around 4:20 p.m. Friday for reports of a woman chasing a man with a hatchet, the Patriot Ledger reported. The 83-year-old man told officers Shields and another woman kicked in his door, and Shields repeatedly hit him while holding a hatchet and asking him about the title to a car.

The victim said Shields demanded he show her his driver's license and told him she didn't believe it, according to the Patriot Ledger. She left the apartment after getting a phone call, and police allegedly found her in her car smelling of alcohol.

Another man living at the apartment said Shields threatened him as well. She was arrested and charged with home invasion, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a person over 60, armed breaking and entering for a felony, malicious destruction of property and larceny.

Shields, who MBTA officials said is "not on the job," allegedly told police, "I know I'm going to get fired for this."
