Planning Board Approves Housing Production Plan

Known as a "housing production plan," the strategy addresses the need for middle- to low-income housing units.

WEYMOUTH, MA — A plan that would maintain town control over affordable housing was approved by the planning board Jan. 9.

Known as a "housing production plan," the strategy addresses the need for middle- to low-income housing units and recommends a mix with senior housing as well.

Planning board member George Berg told the Weymouth News that the plan gives the town control over where affordable housing takes places. Weymouth needs 437 affordable unit to hit the state requirement that 10 percent of a community's dwellings must be considered affordable for low-income wage earners.

Principal planner Robert Luongo said the town has 1.5 acres set aside for affordable housing.

The plan still needs the approval of the town council and Mayor Robert Hedlund.
