South Shore Hospital’s Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, part of South Shore Health System, has received accreditation as a Comprehensive Center by meeting essential criteria for staffing, training and facility infrastructure and protocols for care, ensuring its ability to support patients with severe obesity.
The designation was made by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®), a joint program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
“When we started this program, our expectation was to provide comprehensive care for anybody interested in weight-loss surgery on the South Shore,” said Neil Ghushe, MD, FACS, Brigham and Women’s Surgical Associates and Director of South Shore Hospital’s Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. “Our team has worked incredibly hard to bring that goal to a reality.”
The
South Shore Hospital Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery is offered in
collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Surgical Associates. The program
includes state-of-the art surgical treatment as well as a team of experts who
provide long-term nutritional and behavioral health support – a key component
to long-term weight-loss success.
“The surgery is just one step in a long process to weight-loss,” Ghushe said. “It takes the work of a lot of people to make sure a patient is successful in navigating through their weight-loss journey. This accreditation reaffirms to people interested in weight-loss surgery that they have a trusted partner here on the South Shore.”
As
part of being named a Comprehensive Center, South Shore will also participate
in a national data registry that yields semi-annual reports on the quality of
its processes and outcomes, identifying opportunities for continuous quality
improvement.
Since April, 2017, the South Shore Hospital Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery has performed more than 100 weight-loss surgeries.
