DIGITS, a statewide program that connects sixth-grade classes with STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) professionals will visit the Abigail Adams Middle School on Wednesday.
STEM professionals, recruited as volunteers by DIGITS, will speak to more than 500 Weymouth sixth graders about their careers and emphasizing the importance of math and science in today’s world. The volunteers are professionals from companies such as EMD Serono, Meditech, and even the Massachusetts State Police Laboratories.
First implemented in Massachusetts schools in 2009, DIGITS is visiting Weymouth for the first time this year.

In addition to Weymouth, volunteers are visiting 15 schools in 14 communities across the southeastern part of the state.
Joyce Plotkin, Founder and CEO, of DIGITS said the goals of the program are to demonstrate to students the connections between the math and science they study in school and the world around them.

“Building STEM literacy among America's next generation of leaders is critical,” Plotkin said in a written statement. “Our volunteers from across the state are great role models for the students, represent multiple STEM sectors, and are broadly reflective of the workforce – 44 percent women, 24 percent minority, and 56 percent with advanced degrees.”
