Weymouth Suspect in Bank Robbery Turns Himself In

WEYMOUTH, MA — A Weymouth man wanted in connection to a bank robbery that took place last week turned himself in to police.

Jamie Smith, 30, faces charges related to an Aug. 3 robbery that took place at Eastern Bank on Washington Street, according to the Weymouth Police Department.

At about 2:46 p.m., police responded to a reported robbery at the bank. Police say the suspect entered the bank and passed a note demanding money before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.

While officers were on the way to the location, Dispatcher Stephen Molisse, while off duty and in his personal vehicle, came on the radio reporting a Red Nissan Pathfinder leaving Edgeworth Street towards Pleasant Street at a high rate of speed and with front end damage, police said. Molisse followed the vehicle giving direction of travel, description of the vehicle as well as the plate number. The vehicle then turned into the condo’s located on Pleasant Street and came to a stop. Molisse radioed this update as Officer Canny arrived there.

As the investigation unfolded, it was determined that the operator of this vehicle’s right to operate a motor vehicle was suspended. It was further determined that the plate did not belong on this vehicle nor was the vehicle insured. Inside the vehicle was a police scanner that was programmed to the Weymouth Police frequency. The operator was placed under arrest for operating after license suspension, attaching plates, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. After he was booked on those charges, he was interviewed by the Investigative Services Unit. As a result of that interview, it was determined that he was involved in the bank robbery and further information obtained from that interview helped lead to the identification of Smith, police said.
