Town Council Backs $33 Million For New Tufts Library

The town will also receive $12 million from a state grant.

WEYMOUTH, MA — Weymouth is getting a new library.

Last week, the town council approved $33 million in funding for a new 53,000-square-foot Tufts Library to be located near Weston Park. The funding includes about $12 million from a grant provided by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. The town will pay for the remaining $21 million.

“I think it’s going to be an incredible amenity. It’s going to increase the demand for property in Weymouth,” Councilor Ed Harrington said.

Library and town officials say the new building is needed to replace the current aging building. The new library will include an expanded children's services department, more meeting spaces, more study rooms, an expanded tech offering, and an outdoor amphitheater.

The current building needs millions in work, officials say.

“The need is clear to the town I think and when you can get a need this big built with someone else paying for over a third of it, I think it’s a no-brainer,” Mayor Robert Hedlund’s Chief of Staff Ted Langill said.

Langill said the project will not have a major impact on the town’s budget because some of the town’s debts will be paid off within the next couple of years.
