Weymouth Community Service Class Teaches Students to Make Impact On Others

One Weymouth High School community service class is giving students a unique experience outside of the classroom.

Weymouth students have an edge over other students entering college and the working field. That’s because each Weymouth High School student must take a Community Service Learning Class which has students  assisting classroom teachers, collecting items for Toys for Tots and organizing scholarship fundraisers.

Melanie Curtin , the class instructor said she created the course in 2009 to reinforce necessary workplace skills like problem solving, communication, planning, organizing and work ethics and to instill in students a desire to give back to their community.

“By having the students from the CSL class create projects involving all grades and schools it has allowed younger students to look up to them and understand the value of volunteering,” Curtin said.

Curtin said students are passionate to participate in the program because they each get to pick their service project.

“The skills they are working on are invaluable in the business world but the empowerment of creating a project and seeing the difference one or two people can make is priceless,” she said.

Students volunteer at local food pantries, health and fitness program assisting middle school physical education classes, and assisting with the Weymouth Public School Special Olympics and more.
