Weymouth Man in Back-to-Back Hingham Hit and Runs Charged with Drunken Driving

Information in this article is from Hingham District Court. Arrests and charges mentioned do not imply conviction.

A Weymouth Man faces multiple charges after allegedly driving away from two car crashes in Hingham.

Donald Handy, 29, of Weymouth, was arrested on Dec. 17 and charged with leaving the scene of property damage, failure to use care while driving, drinking alcohol from an open container in a vehicle, operating to endanger, leaving the scene of property damage and drunken driving (second offense). He was arraigned in Hingham District Court on Dec. 18 and is free on the promise that he will return for his next court date, stay alcohol-free, submit to alcohol testing, and not drive without a valid state licence.

On Dec. 17 around 7:15 p.m., police received a report of a hit and run crash at Plaza Azteca on Whiting Street, followed by a second report of a crash on King Philip Path, according to court records from Hingham District Court.

When police arrived at King Philip Path, a dead end street, they saw Handy’s vehicle and a Honda Rogue. The driver of the Rogue told police the crash happened on Main Street while he was stopped, waiting to make a left turn in front of the Scarlet Oak Tavern.

As the Rogue was making the left, Handy’s car allegedly came from the left, crossed over the double striped lines, cross back right, and hit the front of the victim’s car. The victim followed Handy’s vehicle as he turned down Queen Anne Lane before stopping at the end of King Philip Path.

Handy allegedly told the driver and his two passengers that he could give them an XBOX or PlayStation 4, along with $300 to make the incident go away, according to a police report by Officer Jeffrey Kilroy. Due to his behavior, one of the passengers in the Rogue, a retired Miami-Dade police officer, took Handy’s license to stop him from fleeing the scene.

When Kilroy talked to Handy, he described his speech as “slurred” and eyes as “a little red but bloodshot.” Handy told police that he was hit by the Rogue, but the front-end damage on Handy’s vehicle was not consistent with such a crash, according to police.

When police at the scene were notified that the car matched the description of the car involved in the crash at Plaza Azteca, Handy was asked if he was involved in the crash, but he replied that he couldn’t remember.

He told police that he was coming from Wal-Mart after purchasing a PlayStation for his girlfriend. When asked about the crash, he said all he could remember is the other vehicle hitting him.

After failing a field sobriety test, Handy was taken into custody but became aggressive and argumentative with police. According to Kilroy’s report, Handy yelled at police, “I should have ran, you suck, you turning my life you f****t.”

Handy continued to verbally insult police through the booking process stating, “Don’t you f*****s know about that death in Baltimore? This is why people f*****g hate you.”

In his report, Kilroy called Handy, “the most disrespectful person I have ever arrested in 15 years of law enforcement.”

Handy is due back in court on Jan. 28, 2015.
