Weymouth School Committee Says No to Question 2

The school committee voted to oppose a proposal that would lift the state's cap on charter schools.

WEYMOUTH, MA — The Weymouth School Committee have joined over 200 other school districts in opposing a proposal to lift the state's cap on charter schools.

At a recent meeting, the board voted to oppose Question 2, according to the Weymouth News. If approved by the voters, Question 2 would allow for up to 12 new Massachusetts charter schools a year with no limit on total schools. There are currently 78 charter schools in the state with a cap of 120.

Funding for charter schools is done on a per pupil basis, with the school districts covering the costs. The school district loses about $1.2 million a year to charter schools, according to the Massachusetts Teachers Association.
