Why Is The Flag Half-Staff On Monday?

The flag has been lowered at all state buildings Monday, July 16, in honor of fallen Weymouth Police Officer Michael Chesna.

WEYMOUTH, MA — Gov. Charlie Baker has ordered the United States flag and Commonwealth of Massachusetts flag be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings Monday, July 16, in honor of fallen Weymouth Police Officer Michael Chesna. The flags are to be lowered immediately and remain so until further notice.

Chesna, 42, was shot with his own gun Sunday morning by Emanuel Lopes, police said. Lopes allegedly then killed a woman who was inside her home while he fled police. Lopes remains hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries and is expected to be arraigned Monday afternoon on two counts of homicide.

Chesna was a father of two young children, ages 4 and 9. He was described as a family man. Chesna, an Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, would have been on the force six years tomorrow.
