Big Games Galore in Wilmington This Week

As playoffs approach, Wildcat teams jockey for position.

As teams come down the stretch run of the season, games begin to have much more meaning in the middle weeks of February.

While the girls hockey team wrapped up its home schedule with on Saturday, the Lady Wildcats remain in action Monday. The team skates at Medford High School at 4 p.m. and travels to Gardner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Tuesday night is the boys basketball team’s most recent huge game in the Cape Ann League. After a on Friday to keep hopes of a league title alive, the Wildcats next host Masconomet at 7 p.m.

Head coach Joseph Maiella’s charges currently sit at 11-3 in league play while North Andover and Masco are at 10-2. If Wilmington wins Tuesday and Masco topples North Andover when they meet later in the week, the Wildcats still have a shot at a share of the crown.

The Wildcats also are in action Friday night as they host border rival Tewksbury at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, the girls basketball team, which is also already , looks to improve on its playoff positioning. The Lady Wildcats travel to Masco for a 6:30 p.m. tip off.

Newburyport continued to be the only thorn in Steve Scanlon’s Wilmington boys hockey team’s side on Saturday night. The Wildcats had the chance to clinch the Cape Ann title with a victory, but instead suffered their first defeat of the season and now cling to a small lead in the standings.

Newburyport also erased a 2-0 third period lead earlier in the season to earn a , so the Clippers are the only team in Cape Ann the Wildcats haven’t defeated.

Still, Scanlon’s charges, 12-1-1 in league play, hope to inch closer to their crown on Wednesday at 8 p.m. as they host North Reading at .

The team is back in action Saturday at 2:30 p.m. as they close out the week with action against visiting Peabody.
