Everything Green: Ewwwweeee….. Yuuuuuuck!

Diaper changing is not fun business. It has its cute moments, but overall it is messy and stinky and it costs big-time moula to keep that babies’ cute little bottom fresh and clean.

Before you click the back button, let me show you how to pay for your next summer vacation. (If you are diapering or going to be soon, that is.)

Let’s say the average cost per disposable diaper is .19 cents per. A newborn goes through 8-12 diapers a day. Let’s just say 10 diapers a day for this conversation. 70 diapers a week. And there are 4.4 weeks in a month. That makes 308 diapers a month multiply by .19 cents and you get about $60 a month.

For 12 months, that amounts to $720 a year. For 3 years is $2160.

$2100 is a vacation.

Now, when most people see the words cloth diapers form on my lips, I can already hear what they are thinking before the words even come out. Ewwwweeee….. Yuuuuuuck! (And oftentimes “Is she nuts?”) But take it from someone who uses both cloth and disposable, that it is the same amount of work and yuck and stink and poo, regardless of the type of diaper. The only additional step, is the lugging an extra load of laundry downstairs, and dumping them into the washer and then the dryer. A load in the dryer is about 40 cents max. Yes, once baby gets bigger and eats solids, solids will come out the other end too and you have to deal with those, but until then, it is dump and wash. Pun Intended.

But check this – Let’s say you get adventurous and explore the possibility of cloth diapering for a minute. Let’s say you buy 20 of these ultra cool, super high-tech, one-size-fits all, adjustable cloth diapers that are made out of breathable, waterproof material. And they cost you $18 – 20 apiece. Yes, that is an upfront investment of about $400. It’s substantial, but let us compare:

$2100 - $400 = $1700

$1700 is also a vacation.

And get this – with a second baby, each use is like putting 20 cents back in your pocket!

Cloth diapers are not what they used to be. Check this out to see how cool they are:

Oh and did I mention, it is the greener choice too? Hello to the tons and tons of diaper waste and chemicals that is thrown into the earth because of disposable diapers. And yes, we use them too. But know that there are alternative disposable diapers that do not include the bad, harsh chemicals and you can find them easily online or at your local Whole Foods.
