Crash on Interstate 93 in Wilmington Involved 80-Year-Old Wrong-Way Driver

Two people were injured.

An 80-year-old Lynnfield man driving south in the northbound lanes on Interstate 93 around 9:30 Saturday morning caused a three-vehicle crash in Wilmington, according to Massachusetts State Police.

The unidentified wrong-way driver drove a 2013 Acura, and was uninjured in the crash, State police did not release the man’s name.

The two other vehicles involved were a 2006 Jaguar, driven by a 25 year-old man from Brighton, and a 2002 Chrysler, driven by a 26 year-old female from Central Falls, RI. Both of these operators were transported to Lawrence General Hospital with minor injuries, according to state police.

The crash also resulted in a fire in the Chrysler.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Wilmington and Andover Fire/EMS Departments and all personnel were clear from the scene by shortly after 10 a.m., with minimal impact on traffic. The facts and circumstances remain under investigation, and no citations have been issued at this time.
