DeLai: 'I Apologize and take Responsibility for my Decisions'
The Wilmington School Committee accepted superintendent Mary DeLai's resignation Monday following her OUI arrest in August.
WILMINGTON, MA — After over three hours of executive session Monday evening, Wilmington's school committee emerged from the Roman House to announce that it had accepted the resignation of Wilmington Public Schools superintendent Mary DeLai.
After being alerted of DeLai's Aug. 25 arrest for operating under the influence in Salem, The school committee held a closed executive session Monday before alerting the public that it had accepted DeLai's resignation. School Committee Vice Chairman Steven Bjork announced the news in front of reporters outside the Roman House through the reading of a prepared statement.
"Ms. DeLai has decided, for personal reasons, to tender her resignation as superintendent of schools in Wilmington," Bjork said to reporters and those who gathered outside the Roman House."The committee has decided to accept DeLai's resignation. On behalf of the committee, we would like to thank Ms. DeLai for her service to the children of Wilmington."

During the reading of a prepared statement, DeLai was apologetic for the incident that occurred.
"I apologize and take responsibility for my actions," DeLai told reporters after the committee's executive session.

Wilmington town manager Jeffrey Hull and at least one member of the Board of Selectmen received the State police report from an anonymous source on Thursday, Sept. 29, and notified town and school committee officials.
"I also apologize for not disclosing this information myself," DeLai said at the press conference."But it has been a difficult time for me and my loved ones, one that we had hoped to deal with privately."
The school committee will now begin a search for an interim superintendent of schools.
"Our first order of business will be to find an interim superintendent who can ensure a seamless transition to the next superintendent," Bjork added at the press conference."We are looking forward to putting this matter behind us and looking forward."
