Despite Heavy Winter Snow, High School Sports Season Remains on Track

WHS athletics director said recent weeks without snow mean season likely to start on time.

What a difference a few weeks makes.

Towards the end of February and beginning of March, it seemed like an eternity in the future that spring sports seasons would be ready to go. With over 100 inches of snow this winter, delays in the high school athletics schedule seemed inevitable.

But as of Tuesday, Wilmington High School athletics director Ed Harrison said he believes Wildcat teams are on schedule to open their campaigns on time.

“A month ago I certainly thought that we were going to be starting late,” said Harrison. “Right now, it’s actually looking not too bad. A lot of teams start in the gym or go out in the parking lot to begin with. If we’re inside for a few days, I don’t think it’s a big loss. I thought we wouldn’t be seeing a field until the beginning of April.”

Though the first games of the season are not slated until April 4 when the varsity softball team travels to face Tewksbury, tryouts are rapidly approaching.

Monday is the first day of team activities, just weeks after the conclusion of the winter postseason.

Harrison said the is responsible for preparing the fields for high school players, and they have the final say on when the venues are ready for practice and game action.

“Looking ahead, the good weather is on its way,” said Harrison. “Obviously, we look forward to it. Our winters teams had great seasons, but it is a great feeling to get to this point where you can head outside and the weather will just get continuously better.”
