Field Hockey Continues Recent Success With Fast Start

The Wilmington field hockey team has put together a string of recent success, including a postseason appearance that saw them push formidable foe Belmont to brink last year. So far this season, the Wildcats seem poised to continue that trend.

Following a 2-1 victory over Reading on Thursday, the team improved to 2-0-1 on the year under first-year head coach Leanne Ebert.

Entering the new campaign, Ebert said she expected junior Amanda Richards and senior Casey Herra to leave their impact on the program this year. Versus Reading, Richards notched an assist on the first Wildcat goal and scored the game-winning tally while Herra snagged the win in goal with 13 saves.

In addition, Ebert said captains Megan Howland and Emily Colosimo will be critical pieces to the team.

"They're extremely dependable, organized, willing to help out in any capacity and their leadership has helped bring the team together," said Ebert.

A solid core of veteran players from last year's team, but the Wildcats also have a group of young players who have already contributed at the varsity level.

Though Ebert is in her first year leading the team, she said there have been no problems getting acclimated with her players.

"I'm happy to be back coaching in Wilmington," said Ebert. "Fortunately I've worked closely with Jodi Campbell in the past, am aware of her style and techniques, and we talk regularly about the team. I believe this has helped with the transition this season.
