Home Stretch Under Way for Wildcat Teams

The postseason is just around the corner for high school teams around the state, and in Wilmington just two weeks of regular season tilts remain.

On Monday, the Wildcats have the day off with the exception of the JV boys hockey team which travels to Shawsheen Tech.

Tuesday is shaping up to potentially be a memorable one for the girls basketball team. The Lady Wildcats toppled Melrose, 43-39, on Sunday to bring their record to 9-7 on the year.

With that win, the team needs one victory to clinch a playoff spot. Last place Wakefield visits town at 7 p.m. on Tuesday on Senior Night for the Lady Wildcats, in a game that also serves as the last to ever be played before the gym is demolished next week. There will also be a fundraiser after the game hoping to raise money for new banners that will hang in the new school.

Also on Tuesday, the boys basketball team begins to wrap up its campaign with a road tilt against Wakefield beginning at 7 p.m.

Wilmington's hockey teams are both in action on the road Wednesday night. First, the girls team plays in Burlington at 6:15 p.m. The boys hockey team hits the ice at 8 p.m. inside the same venue, hoping to keep its Super 8 hopes alive against last year's Division 1 state champion. The Wildcats toppled the same foe earlier this year.

Several Wilmington athletes will be in action on Thursday. Eligible athletes will participate in the Division III qualifying meet on the day.

Friday features a basketball doubleheader in Burlington, except this one comes with a twist. The boys team was slated to host Burlington at 7 p.m., but they will be the home team in Burlington due to the gym demolition. The Lady Wildcats are also slated to play in Burlington against the first place Red Devils.

Saturday is another huge test for the boys hockey team. The Wildcats host Reading, a Division 1 team also in the running for Super 8 consideration. Puck drops at 2:30 p.m.

The busy week concludes on Sunday as the girls basketball team travels to Lynn to take part in the Spartan Tournament. Tip off comes at 12:30 p.m.
