Wilmington Middle School Leadership Council, made up of 27 eighth-graders, gave up their time during a recent volunteer event.

On the Friday before Memorial Day, May 25, 2012, a group of selected students from the Leadership Council at went to Cradles to Crayons for a community service project. The Leadership Council consisted of 27 eighth grade students who are considered leaders in the community.

These students demonstrate the school’s three core values of Responsibility, Citizenship, and Confidence, and are role models to their peers. The Council had come up with a list of places where they would want to spend their time helping the community.

They decided that Cradles to Crayons would be a good place. The students left school early, stopped by for lunch on the way, then arrived at Cradles to Crayons in Brighton at approximately 12 p.m.

First, all the students were briefed and given a tour of the facility by the Cradle to Crayons staff members. They all started out in a place called the Toy Shop, where the members of the Council cleaned, inspected, and sorted all the donated toys.

Ten students were chosen to fill orders. They filled orders as requested by needy families for their children. There would be a list of items the family needed and the students would go to each part of the warehouse and collect the item.

The experience at Cradles to Crayons was fun and meaningful for all the students. The students got the chance to contribute to the society in a nice way. The eighth graders were happy that they got a chance to give back to their community and would be more than willing to go back and help sometime soon.
