Despite another close victory, boys hockey mentor Steve Scanlon concerned with team's effort.
Despite a 1-0 win over Stoneham on Wednesday, something isn’t right with the Wilmington High School boys hockey team. And it’s not something head coach Steve Scanlon knows how to fix.
“We were happy with the result, but we didn’t play well. We’re not playing well. There’s a lot of individual stuff going on right now,” said Scanlon. “We’ve been resilient; we’ve been able to play when we’re desperate. Those are all good signs, but we haven’t shown that we can pull away from a team and manage a game yet.”
Cam Owens showed signs of life just 17 seconds into the second period on Wednesday as he scored an electric goal in open ice to provide the decisive goal against Stoneham.

Drew Foley made several key saves in the final minute to help Wilmington hold onto the victory. The locals haven’t allowed more than three goals on the year, but the team has also scored more than two goals on once this season.

“We’re missing a lot of the effort,” said Scanlon. “They have to want to be doing it. You can ride them all you want, but if they’re not going to do it they’re not going to do it. That’s a little alarming right now, so we’re going to try to fix that.
